What I Do: Educate, inspire, guide, support, communicate, care, love, lead and grow.
What I Love: Teaching, learning, yoga, hiking, the earth, eating Indian and Thai food, making connections, helping, exploring, family and friends.
My Life Story: I grew up for 18 years in Terrace; a Northern BC town. My childhood is filled with memories of spending time with family (immediate and extended) exploring the great things offered in a small town surrounded by nature. Summers and sometimes even spring (brrrrr!) were spent at Kalum Lake with my paternal grandparents, winter afternoons were spent with the whole family at my Omi's place playing Mensch ärgere Dich nicht (basically the German version of Trouble) and cards. Afternoon hikes up Terrace Mountain and walks with our dog Tanner down Howe Creek Trail kept the whole family fit.
My mother and father firmly believed in being active and throughout our childhood, my older sister and I were signed up for softball, soccer, taekwondo, tennis, swimming, dance and skiing.
We were also encouraged to explore our musical sides as my mother is a very enthusiastic singer. I enrolled in band in Grade 7 and continued until Graduation. The "band geek" in me led me to explore the theater both in the summer during drama camps and in high school during musical productions such as "Oklahoma" and "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying".
After graduating, I went on my very first trip without my parents; to Tokyo, Japan and Beijing, China. This trip opened my eyes up to the world and further heightened my wanderlust. I came back from this trip having solidified my decision to become a teacher as it gave me the opportunity for continued learning and growth as well as the chance to do what I love, wherever I wanted.
My post secondary experiences kept me in Terrace for one year at Northwest Community College (NWCC) and then in Kamloops for four more at Thompson Rivers University (TRU). I was able to study abroad twice in this time: once in Qingdao, China for two months and another time in Seoul, Korea for four months. I participated in many international student activities while at TRU including being President of the Language Exchange Club.
During post secondary, I met and made some of my best friends who come from around the world (Chile, Sweden, Korea, Netherlands, Estonia, Kyrgyzstan etc.). I felt like I grew and matured more as a person in these five years then I have in my entire life. I experienced: adventure during my time in China and Korea, laughter during my first year away from home, hard work at the job I knew I never wanted, grief at the loss of my grandfather, joy at being accepted into the Bachelor of Education program, love from the person I least suspected, the career I wanted during my practicum in Osoyoos, heart ache during my last month of university and finally renewal as I accepted the career I was destined to pursue.
My future has me in Seoul, Korea teaching at a BC Offshore School. A lot has happened in my life in these past 23 years but I can honestly say I am right where I want to be. For that, I am grateful.
